Some of the projects are in the design phase, and some are near completion; all are designed to meet the changing needs of the community and better serve citizens.

ATHLETIC FIELDS
Athletic Field Improvements
Scope: Revitalization of organized and casual play outdoor athletic fields throughout the City. Current projects include the replacement of scoreboards at all three baseball fields at Miller Park (Bradford, Lloyd, & Happy Lee); new grading of infields and backstop replacement at select Peaks View Park softball fields; and water and electrical utility upgrades at Peaks View Park.
Status: Project 80% completed; water line upgrades at Peaks View Park ongoing.
Completion Date: October 1, 2010.

Diamond Hill Neighborhood Center Renovations
Scope: This project focused on general exterior site improvements to the Diamond Hill Neighborhood Center; including the purchase of adjacent property for on-site parking. The project is divided into two phases:
Phase I consists of the construction of a porous pavement (environmentally friendly) parking area across the street from the Center; parking lot lighting, a small delivery handicapped accessible parking lot adjacent to the Center building, replacement of playground equipment, storm water infrastructure, and sidewalks.
Phase II includes removal of the existing retaining wall, site grading, replacement of fencing, sidewalk construction and other masonry improvements, new outdoor lighting, park amenities, signage, and landscaping. Funding is a mixture of City capital and grant monies.
Status: Phase I has been completed. Phase II design drawings have been completed and are in the final review process. Phase II will be bid out within the next 30 days.
Completion Date: December 1, 2010.

Miller Center Renovations
Scope: Revitalization of the Miller Center by redesigning classroom and office space to reflect the needs of the community and bringing the building into compliance with accessibility guidelines. The final design for the building will reflect the sustainability guidelines of the City of Lynchburg, with a focus on energy efficiency and green design principles. The consultant is performing basic building investigatory work.
Status: Consultants CMSS Architects, PC, have been hired to complete the Preliminary Design and Cost Analysis.
Completion Date: July 1, 2010
Sandusky House
Scope: Improvements to sidewalks adjacent to Sandusky House to improve accessibility to this important part of Lynchburg’s historic fabric. Funding is a combination of private and donated monies.
Status: The design stage is nearly complete and VDOT is currently reviewing the design drawing and bid documents.

Yoder Center Renovation
Scope: This project will fix long-standing storm-water issues that have an impact on both the park and nearby residents, while improving the functionality, accessibility, and sustainability of the park over the long term.
Status: In-house design drawings and specifications are nearly completed, and the project should be underway by February, 2010.
Completion Date: March 1, 2011.

Riverside Park Sprayground
Scope: Construction of a spray ground (zero depth entry) at Riverside Park near the existing basketball courts. This project is funded with City capital monies and donations.
Status: Project is 90% complete. Sprayground opened on July 31. Minor improvements ongoing.
Completion date: September 1, 2010

Riverside Park Construction Phase I
Scope: This project is part of Phase I of improvements outlined in the recently completed Riverside Park Master Plan. Specific improvements include: final design and construction of protective train shed; complete restoration of the train; accessibility improvements to the Alpine Trail and interior walkways; directional and interpretive signage, as well as park amenity improvements; new street connections to Randolph College and the James River Heritage Trail and landscape and historic garden improvements. Funding includes grant and City capital monies.
Status: Phase I of the park plan is under review by VDOT (the grant administrator).

OTHER PROJECTS (back to top)
Kemper Station Phase II
Scope: Second Phase of renovations to the historic Kemper Street Station. Improvements to the station building include: elevator upgrades, chimney repairs and redirecting storm water drainage. Site improvements are focused on increasing handicap parking, adding a pedestrian crosswalk and increasing the availability of utility services within the adjacent Kemper Station park. The Kemper Station walking/biking trail will also receive additional amenities.
Status: Work underway, 80% complete. Signage installation, traffic improvements, repairs to lower parking lot are all ongoing.

Creekside Trail Implementation Project
Scope: Phase I of Creekside Trail Implementation Project will improve and expand the existing Creekside Trail from Hollins Mill Park to Lynchburg College. The conceptual design phase for the entire trail was recently completed.
Status: Phase I is in the planning stage, estimated completion of project is in 6-18 months.
