1600 Concord Turnpike, Lynchburg, VA 24504

Pervical's Sign

56 acres

Visitors are often amazed at the peace and serenity that descends upon hikers as they enter the Percival's Island Natural Area located off of Concord Turnpike.  This wonderful portion of the James River Heritage Trail provides access to an island in the James River; a powerful reminder of the role of the river as a haven for wildlife is reinforced as the visitor strolls along the gentle grade of the old railroad bed that traverses the length of the island.  Visitors may see herons, migrating waterfowl and many native plants and animals as they follow the paved trail.

To access this section of the James River Heritage Trail, visitors have several options.  From the Lynchburg side of the river, hikers can enter at the parking area near Jefferson Street and Concord Turnpike.  For visitors from Amherst County, access to the trail is at the terminus of Fertilizer Road, past the Central Virginia Training Center.  Fishing is permitted in accordance with State of Virginia fishing regulations, and swimming and glass containers are not allowed.

Anyone wishing to spend a quiet afternoon or quick bike ride while enjoying views of the James River will find a lovely park with many special places to explore.
