City Efforts with Litter Control
Public Works (PW) schedules time for PW employees to pickup litter year round on the Rt. 29 Expressway as well as other heavily traveled roadways. Normally these roadways are not an option for Adopt-A-Street volunteers due to safety issues.
Lynchburg's Adopt-A-Street/Spot program began in 1991. Today more than 80 locations across the City are currently adopted by volunteers who do at least four clean-ups per year at their location.
To Adopt-A-Street, an individual or group needs to select at least 1/2 mile of City roadway to collect litter from at least four times per year. The City provides orange litter bags, grab-its and safety vests and will also collect the bags of litter for disposal.
To learn how you can join our growing number of litter collection volunteers, please call (434) 455-6087.
Annual City-Wide Spring Cleanup - "Love Where You Live"
Each spring, the City of Lynchburg in partnership with Keep Lynchburg Beautiful hosts a spring cleanup. Citizens and volunteer groups are encouraged to meet at one central location in the city where they will be given cleanup supplies, a location or two to clean and refreshments. The cleanup begins at 10:00 a.m. and is usually completed by 12 noon. All trash collected is placed on the street for City collections crews to pickup.
