Appalachian Power Underground Vault Work in Downtown (Spring-Summer 2019)

Appalachian Power and the City of Lynchburg announce today a formalized schedule of work for Appalachian Power’s ongoing investment in Downtown Lynchburg’s underground electrical infrastructure.  Thoughtful and extensive planning and coordination were undertaken between both organizations in the design of this schedule, and it will allow for Appalachian Power to address critical electrical needs in the Downtown Lynchburg system prior to joint construction of the Main Street Renewal Project.

Over the coming months, Appalachian Power will work in six different locations throughout Downtown Lynchburg, replacing the aging electrical system with new wire, transformers, concrete vaults, manholes and grates.  The contractor for Appalachian Power, Carolina Conduit Systems, works seven days a week during daylight hours which enables its crews to progress quickly through each project. A tentative schedule for each of the six projects, which may change due to weather or the ability of the contractor to progress more quickly than anticipated, is as follows:

    • Early March – Late April: Ninth Street (between Main & Church Streets)
    • Early-April – Early May: Lynchburg Community Market - Small Parking Lot
    • Late April – Mid August: Tenth Street (between Main & Church Streets)
    • Early May – Early July:  Ninth Street (between Main & Commerce Streets)
    • Mid-June – Late August: 11th Street (between Main & Church Streets)
    • Mid-August – Early Sept.: Seventh Street (between Main & Commerce Streets)

Prior to the start of work at each location, press releases will be issued detailing any lane or street closures, as well as detailed explanations of the work to be completed. Additionally, individual stakeholders adjacent to the construction zones will be contacted by City of Lynchburg and Appalachian Power representatives to address any issues or needs prior to construction.  The first project, located on Ninth Street (between Main and Church Streets), is currently progressing according to schedule.

In July 2018, the City of Lynchburg and Appalachian Power announced the joint Main Street Renewal Project. Appalachian Power’s work on these streets is a precursor to the Main Street Renewal Project which will begin in the fall 2019.  More details about the Main Street Renewal Project, including project timelines and scope of work, will be announced in late spring 2019.
