Fifth Street Public Meeting Postponed Until Mar. 19
This third phase of the Fifth Street Utility & Streetscape Project is planned to begin immediately following the public meeting in March 2018. It will complete the infrastructure improvements begun in 2009, including the replacement of the 100+ year old finished water main on Fifth Street and the installation of a new raw water main that will transport water from the James River to the College Hill Water Treatment Plant. The new finished water main will provide increased water capacity for the Fifth Street Corridor and Downtown area as both areas rapidly develop and grow. Additionally, new sidewalks, crosswalks, curbs, landscaping, light poles, and benches will be installed to refresh the streetscaping on Fifth Street.
Utility work will be conducted on Fifth Street between Jackson Street and Monroe Street, as well as on Park Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. Streetscape improvements will be completed on Fifth Street between Jackson Street and Taylor Street. During the project, Fifth Street will be closed in the construction area to all traffic, including emergency vehicles. The City is working closely with all businesses and residents in the project area to ensure that pedestrian access will be available to all properties at all times.
At this public meeting, representatives from the City of Lynchburg, Lynchburg City Schools, and GLTC will discuss the project timeline, expected construction activities, detours, emergency routes, and alternate bus routes and stops.
