    Hunsdon "H" Cary, III (At-large)

    Hunsdon “H” Cary, III, was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and graduated from Virginia Episcopal School and from Ohio University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. “H” married Susan Holcombe Adams, a Lynchburg native, and they moved to Richmond, where he entered the School of Hospital Administration at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his administrative residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center and received a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration.

    “H” served as the assistant administrator of a community hospital in South Carolina before entering the U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps, where he served from 1971 to 1975, attaining the rank of Captain. He then worked for a proprietary hospital corporation before joining Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg as Administrator in 1976. He became President & CEO in 1985. He retired on March 1, 2010, after 33 ½ years, to run for a seat on City Council.

    Locally, “H” has served on the boards of the American Red Cross and Mental Health Association and on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He was a licensed nursing home administrator (35 yrs) and has served on the board of the Virginia Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging and is the recipient of its Public Service Award and Chairman’s Citation. Nationally, “H” chaired the Executive Council subcommittee on Housing Organization for the Episcopal Church (USA) and served as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and as an evaluator for the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission. He currently serves on the board of Area Office 004/Local Board 045 of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Selective Service System.

    "H" served three years on the City"s Physical Development committee and currently Chairs the City Finance committee.  He represents the City on the Lynchburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority board and is Chairman of the Horizon Behavioral Health board (formerly Central Virginia Community Services).  In 2012, he was awarded the Public Service award by the SHOPO Foundation for Youth.  He is a member of the Lynchburg Sports Club and a football, basketball, and softball official with the Colonial Official’s Association of the Virginia High School League. “H” is also licensed by the FCC as an amateur (ham) radio operator, K4TM, and enjoys reading, jogging, and an occasional game of golf.

    Elected as an at-large City Council representative in 2010, “H” believes in fiscal responsibility, supporting public safety, seeking efficiency in government services, supporting the Lynchburg city schools, and listening to the citizens of Lynchburg.

    “H” and Sue have three grown children: Hunt, Will, and Ginna, all of whom graduated from E.C. Glass High School. They have four grandchildren, Brooke, Caden, Rome and Miles.
