A rewarding way to get involved in the democracy on which our nation is founded is to serve as an election officer.
Officers are needed to help conduct elections in the City's 18 precincts and Central Absentee Precinct.
You are a registered voter in Virginia
You have completed an introduction to becoming an election officer meeting
You have completed the required New Officer of Election training
The Electoral Board has appointed you as an Officer of Election
An Officer of Election's primary role and responsibility is to ensure correct procedures are followed at his or her assigned precinct on Election Day.
Officers of Election will be required to:
Complete Oath of Affirmation
Attend all required training sessions
Complete a background check
Complete a Confidentiality Oath
Report to the polls on time
Follow established procedures
Deal effectively with voters and work well with other officers
Contact General Registrar as needed
Contact Electoral Board as needed
Perform work accurately and neatly
Complete required yearly training and paperwork
Polling Place Assignments
Whenever possible, Election Officers are assigned to their "home" precincts. However, if there are no vacancies at your polling place, you may be assigned to a nearby precinct. You may also be asked to serve as a stand by officer to fill in for scheduled Election Officers who cancel. Polls are always open from 6 am to 7 pm.
