State and National Historic Districts
These districts and sites are on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These are strictly honorary listings that recognize the historic significance of a place, building, site, or area and encourages but does not require preservation of the property. Listing on the registers offers limited protection from potentially harmful federally- or state-funded activities. The main benefit of being listed is that owners may qualify for state and federal rehabilitation tax credit programs and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ (DHR) easement program.
The DHR website has more information regarding the registers and a full listing of state and national historic districts and sites.
