Virginia State Income Tax
The Commissioner of the Revenue is responsible for receiving and processing all Virginia state income tax returns and initial estimated tax payments for City of Lynchburg residents. In addition to receiving forms and payments, our office is trained in the most recent state income tax legislation. We offer free preparation of your Virginia income tax return on a first come first serve basis. You must bring a completed copy of your federal return, your W2's and all supporting documentation.

Where do I mail my return and who do I make my check out to? |
Tax returns should be mailed to: Commissioner of the Revenue, PO Box 858, Lynchburg VA 24505-0858. Checks should be made out to: Treasurer, City of Lynchburg. |
When are income taxes and estimated payments due? |
Virginia Individual Income Tax Returns are due May 1. Estimated tax vouchers are due May 1, June 15, September 15 and January 15. |
When can I expect my refund? |
If you qualify for an accelerated refund, our staff will electronically transmit information from your return directly to the Department of Taxation. If the information is within the Department's guidelines you should receive your refund within 7-10 days. Otherwise, you should receive it within 4-6 weeks.
Two refund options are offered. Refunds can be issued by direct deposit into a checking or savings account or on a prepaid debit card, the Virginia Tax Refund Debit Card. The Department will no longer issue paper refund checks. Filers must specify which option they prefer and enter a date of birth on their returns.
